Satellite Parents Program
The focus of the Pig Farm project is on training the kids to become future pig farmers so that upon graduation, they can be set up in a successful pig farming operation of their own. The graduated orphans would then be able to act as satellite/foster parents to children still remaining in the orphanage. Graduates would train some of the remaining kids in the orphanage to be pig farmers as well. In addition, they would help others in their chosen careers and fields of interest. Through this program, they would be able to furnish the kind of safety net that non orphans enjoy in Russian society.
In other words, profits from the pig farm will be directly invested into the future dreams and goals of the remaining orphans
Once proven successful, the pig farm profits can help to set up other businesses.
Other possible businesses include:
- An automobile reconditioning shop. Junk cars would be bought from the the United States and Europe, reconditioned, and sold in the Moscow market. This program is currently in operation at the orphanage in Sergiev Posad.
- A sewing business. The orphans currently make and sew dresses and costumes as well as other things such as dolls and hot pads. They sell these things to tourists that visit Uglich during the summer months. The project has been well thought out and is very successful. It even won second place at the Regional Junior Achievement Competition in Moscow. With a little financial help and expansion, it can become a full blown business.
- A Computer repair and/or software training. Currently there is an Internet Cafe that just opened up at the orphanage this past summer. The orphans will start to receive training on how to use, operate, and fix these computers. The knowledge they receive here can help them to set up a business.
- A Cafe. The children are learning basic waitressing and serving skills, money management, store maintenance and upkeep, and customer relations. These are all very valuable skills should they want to open their own cafe.
In all these programs graduated orphans working in these businesses would act as satellite/foster parents to kids that are still in the orphanage. Children wanting to be teachers, nurses, musicians, carpenters, or anything else can receive help with the living and medical expenses while they get training and education in their chosen field.
